Ford Ranger vs. Volvo 850
Hello,
I have a 1996 Ford Ranger XL regular cab short box 2wd pickup. It has a 120,000 miles and runs really great. I have a chance to trade it for a 1994 Volvo 850 non-turbo Sedan with 177,000 miles. The Volvo also runs well, the timing belt was replaced 30,000 miles ago and it needs nothing. It also has new tires.
Is this a smart trade on my part? Will an 850 with that mileage be good for a while longer?
-Thanks

This is me personally, but I wouldn't make the trade. It's older, has more miles, and its a non-turbo. Not to mention if something does happen, it'll be more expensive to repair. If your truck isn't having problems I would hold off until something better comes along. Now, if you could find a 96 turbo for a similar deal...

i have to agree, if your looking for most dependable, ford rangers do break down but the repair costs would be considerably lower. Its not to say the volvo is assured to have issues, its just more along the lines of if its not broke, dont fix it. so i would only go for the volvo, if you really have your heart set on it. if not. go with what ya know

I'd pass on this. Wait until you find something of comparable mileage.
I would tell you to trade just because the Volvo would get better mileage, but there is a lot of miles on that guy. Considering that your truck is running great, I wouldn't do it. You'd probably need to put more money into that car after you trade it.

Personally, I like non-turbo models, especially if they are older, because they can't possibly need an expensive turbo replacement. Of course mainenance will be critical either way, but turbo-models might in some cases be run a little harder by their acceleration-oriented drivers as well.
Having said that, I would be loathe to trade a used vehicle that I have and know is in pretty good shape foranother usedonethat is going to be (largely) an unknown. As the old saying goes - Better the devil you know than the devil you don't... ;-)
It's different of course if your motivation for considering the trade is that youwant an 850... but if your motivation isto save money on ownership costs, I'd stick with what you have.
