Hood Release Cable Fabrication
There have been many post about the problems with the hood release cable but I am interested to know if anybody has a "trick" for fixing a frayed end of the cable that is inside the car by the hood release handle. I have about 1-2 inches of cable showing but the ends are frayed. Apparently there was a ball or tip at the end of the cable that fits into a slot on the handle and it has broken off. I was thinking of using an electrical connector--the kind you crimp on a wire and see if the end will be large enough to fit in the handle slot? But I am not sure it will fit tight enough on the cable. I also thought about a fishing weight that you "crimp" on the line?
I think it is too small of a spot to try and and solder something on the end. Anybody got any other ideas? And yes I know I will have to eventually spend some $$$ to get it fixed, but I would like to try the "cheap" method first.
Thanks
John

How old is the car? How many miles? I would simply replace the cable with a new one. A hood should be opened no less than very 500 miles. So, if the car has 150,000 miles on it, the hood should have been opened 300 times. I probably open mine twice per week so my 15 year old car would have had the hood opened 1560 times. That's a lot of wear on a cable.
