Someone hit us and totaled our 2017 XC90 and we just got a 2019 XC90. I still have the key from the totaled car, can I have it re-programmed for the new car ?

a good question for your dealer since they'd be doing the programming. Check to see if your fob has the metal emergency key blade as well... that may not be transferrable.

 

Haven't tried it on a SPA car yet. You can have the dealer try but if not you'd still be out the labor and software. If you try it, let us know.

 

Dealer said the original keys are married to the VIN and can not be programmed to a new car. If you purchased a new key it would not be married to a VIN (till the program it) and can be programmed. Thanks for your help !

 

Yes, keys are programmed to the car. But to program a new key we just download software, put the new key in the key reader in the cupholder and click program. So you might be able to program the same key to a different car as the key doesn't have a way of knowing what car it goes to.
