Default Engine identification

Hi

I have a VW T3 with a Volvo motor in it which I am experiencing some problems with. I am guessing the first step to solving these problems is identifying the motor and then taking it from there. Can anyone tell me what to look for and where so that I can figure out what it is that I have?

Cheers

Angus

got a pick?

Not sure which you have - the "white block" 5 cyl and newer 4 cyl have a machined stamp on the block up near the exhaust side of the #1 cyl. For those they use a code like B5252S etc...
