I was looking hard at the Subaru Outback and the XC70. I finally decided to go with the XC70. It's a 2013 Platinum in white with AWD. The engine makes itself known under a bit of pedal but its not bad. The tranny seems to skip over first gear quickly on a gentle acceleration from a stop, feels almost like a stutter. On a more aggressive start from stop it progresses through the gears quite normally. Overall I am quite pleased with the fit and finish, the cargo room, and the pleasant ride. My first service is at 10K or one year. Synthetic oil has really stretched them out! Hopefully owning a Volvo will be a pleasant experience.
