s60 turbo upgrade
I have a 2001 s60 2.4t fwd with the following modifications, EST intake, RICA PPC ecu upgrade, 3"mandrelbent downpipe and catback exhaust. I am still not satisfied with the power attained from these upgrades soI want to upgrade the turbo.
Does anyone know what turbocomes in my car stock? Would it be possible toget a used turbo from an s60R andswap it with mine? If not which bigger turbos could i upgrade too and wouldmy car be able to handle the extra powerat about 16psiif i also upgraded to a front mount intercooler without getting internals? Thanks for the help

RE: s60 turbo upgrade
How much horsepower canI make with the 16T? andcompared to the 18T? Can I do this upgrade without having to do internals. the only other thing I want to do is FMIC and bigger turbo ofcourse. So how much power do you think i can get if i did that and upgraded to the 16t or 18t. Thanks

RE: s60 turbo upgrade
Also i found out today that i need to replace my CBV and Turbo control valve. The only placeI found an aftermarket turbo control valve is IPD but they are out of stock until mid october. Im hoping combined these two faulty parts is why im not satisfied with the power gains. Do you know anywhere else that sells aftermarket TBC's and should i be fine once i've upgraded it or will i need to get some gauges for boost pressure, air/fuel ratio, etc. Thanks in advance

RE: s60 turbo upgrade
Ok if your 13g is a straight flanged model you will need to find a straight flanged 16T or 18T or 19T. If your 13g is an angled flanged model you will have to find a angled 16T or 18T and or a 19T. So yes it will be direct bolt on if you get the same type of flange as your 13g is.
Possibly. Personally I wouldn't want to run the risk of shooting a rod with an 18T even if I was only pushing 15PSI.
No I don't know anywhere else to find a TBC, search using GOOGLE.
Should you be fine once you upgraded the TBC? Or fine once you upgraded your turbo? If you already upgraded your ECU and are running higher boost you should already have a boost/vac gauge in your car because you want to see what boost your running and what your vaccum is looking like. One that can read a minimum of 25 In Hg and 25 PSI will do fine. Also with upgrading your turbo and intercooler setup you don't need an A/F gauge but it is nice if you want to see what your A/F is like. If you do get one DO NOT purchase a Narrowband A/F gauge all it is, is pretty lights and wont tell you anything. What you want is a Wideband A/F gauge it will actually tell you what your A/F is. Yeah your looking at a huge cost difference a Narrowband can be bought for like $50 and a Wideband is over $300, but what your getting are two different things and one is better then the other and I wouldn't want a crap gauge on my ride that didn't really tell me anything. I would want one that actually told me what my A/F ratio was and not just some pretty light show. Go Wideband or not at all.

RE: s60 turbo upgrade
thanks for all the info driver...just one last question i have about the upgrade....once i put a 16t in place of my 13g will i simply be able to reprogram the ecu using the Rica PPC tuner through the OBDII or will i need to have extensive tuning done by a shop to have my car run properly with the new turbo.

RE: s60 turbo upgrade
I replaced my TCV and CBV and theres a significant difference. Before i fixed these two things i installed a boost gauge and was only at 5psi with all my mods including PPC. I now spike at 13-15 psi and the power is much better but it wont run consistent. Could it be something to do with the temperature? Sometimes i will have consistent boost everytime i give itgas and other times if i try topush itall the way throughany gearit loses boost at about 4000 rpm and goes down to 5psi which feels like barely any power at all.

RE: s60 turbo upgrade
What exactly would you consider a tune up? Last time it wwas at the volvo dealership was at 160 000 km when my extended warranty ended. Its at 183 000 km now. I change the oil myself and routine maintenance stuff. Also one symptom i didnt mention before about it....I lose my boost down to 5 psi and it never goes above 5psi after that UNLESS i turn the car off. When i start it back up it will give me 13-15 psi again for one run through a gear then back to 5 until i restart the car again.

RE: s60 turbo upgrade
I would check the spark plug gap. Should be0.028- 0.032 in. (0.7- 0.8 mm)
Volvo says, "However, city driving or fast highway driving may necessitate changing after 15,000 miles (24,000 km) of driving" and your car is modded, so It might need new ones soon.
That is werid that the boost drops like that... Did it start doing that after you got the RICA PPC ecu upgrade?

RE: s60 turbo upgrade
Without the Rica PPC upgrade my boost gauge only reads 5 psi...which is weird because it should be around 8 psi stock i thought. Im thinking its got something to do with the computer because once you shut it off and restart it its almost proper but loses it again. I only had 5 psi with the rica ppc upgrade before i changed my turbo control valve and compressor bypass valve. So now its better but never consistent
