Default Volvo's going to Geely

Looks like Volvo will be sold to those lead-mongering Commies in no time.

Thank God for FCP and iPD because I sure as hell won't be buying from the dealer anymore.

Wow. What is this world coming to. Why can't a company like the one that bought SAAB buy Volvo.

Koenigsegg?

That's funny because Volvo owns 8% of Koenigsegg.

This will be one messy, Swedish Kluusterfjukken

if the deal goes through, I really wonder what quality rating will happen to Volvo. Im betting older Volvo's might hold better value if it did go through.

"Mr. Li’s plan for Volvo, according to the report, is to slash the brand’s costs by taking advantage of lower product development and manufacturing costs available in China."

That is the end of volvo.

As an example, here in Australia they've just started selling the chinese GWM (great wall motor) cars.
Already they are reporting problems with the motors, and there are rumours that if a rear axle bearing goes, you have to replace the entire axle assy.
This I would believe, my company deals with various manufacturers, and anything chinese is BAD news.
Can't get the one piece you need, have to replace entire assemblies.
Not good.

Sad panda says if this goes through, volvo WILL be f....ed and gone in only a few years.

EDIT, oh and don't forget that this geely company is already in bed with ford as a long time trading partner already.

I believe that part about not being able to replace individual parts. They cut costs by making assemblies out of components that are great for initial assembly, but hopelessy non-conducive to later repairs. It's sort of the same for most of the cheapo chinese knock-off products. Pretty much opposes everything that makes my 240 such a pleasure to drive, work on, and diagnose. If it's broken, you get in there and switch it out. Don't have to perform freaking surgery or figure out how much of an assembly needs to be replaced.

Chinese? Those paragons of automotive engineering and assembly, formerly known as The Big Three, have been pushing suppliers to China for some years now. If you want to sell wheel bearing, shocks, wiring harnesses, lug nuts, etc. to them, they better be made in China at rock bottom prices or else you won't get the contract. Quality? Not the car company's problem, in the short run, as it can backcharge the company that supplied the bad part. Now, it seems, Volvo will join in that chorus.

On the other hand, maybe Geeley will engineer and build a true 240 replacement.

Jaguar has about a one year lead; but does anybody want to handicap the coming race to the bottom between Jaguar and Volvo? I'm not buying the first Geeley-designed and engineered Volvo!

sad story. Will this affect the market for new old stock parts from Volvo?

nos will probably sky rocket in price.

At work, some of the bits we work on have chinese bearings, they last maybe 5 months.
'***' bearings last about 3+ years in the same application.

As for warranty, good luck, lots of chinese products will say 1 year warranty, but read the fine print, (if it's there) "bearings are only warranted for 3 months"

I believe the phrase is "LIMITED WARRANTY".

I've already started my hunt for an 850 replacement (for that sad day when I can't keep it going), oh and volvo is NOT on the list......

*"maybe Geeley will engineer and build a true 240 replacement."*

And you'd buy one ? are you mad ? a basic volvo from china ?
I'd sooner castrate myself with a wipper snipper running at half speed.

This thing would be made out of recycled scooters, drive sideways and have a two cylinder two stroke motor.
Blow a light bulb and you'd replace the whole car.......

The manufacturing of cars (even quality cars) is becoming 'passe'. Any developed or developing country can do it these days.

Which begs the question...

Q: What are fully developed countries interested in manufacturing for obscene profits?
A: Weapons.

IMO
