Default Clicking noise from steering column inside cabin

I have. 2005 Volvo V50 Turbo. Out of the blue, I turned the wheel driving yesterday to make a turn, and now I have what sounds like a piece of plastic clicking inside the steering wheel, inside the cabin.
Any ideas? Also, there are what appears to be 2 long holes that I assume lead to mounting screws bottom of steering column cover, closest to drives knees.
Can the cover come off, or will it be impossible to get back on?
I want to take a look inside.
