Default 1981 240 Volvo

Wifey and I purchased a Volvo in Boise Idaho. We needed to get away together so we decided to drive it home all the way to San Diego California. The first 4 to 500 miles were basically trouble free but , after fueling up and Wellesley, I began to hear an exhaust leak. 50 to 75 miles down the road it began to stutter. It ran like a top between 35k and 4K RPM at 65 to 70 miles an hour. As we continued to drive the stuttering or coughing became more frequent. To make a long story short we stopped in Las Vegas and decided to have it towed home. It idles fine now but of course it will need repair to the exhaust. It appears it is completely apart between the catalytic converter and muffler. I will take it to a shop this week. Do you think the repair of the exhaust system will solve my engine problem too? Just curious to what you enthusiasts have to say. Thanks! Btw, apparently this was once a turbo charged vehicle but not any longer.

Doubtful, as the leak is down the line and the problem got worse over time. Leak is after the cat, it shouldn't affect anything but noise. Hard to say other than that what with a car that was turbo and now it's not... But start with the basics, tune up, sensors, vacuum leaks, etc.

was the turbo delete done as a complete engine swap, or what?

turbo engines tend to have lower compression ratios to prevent massive knocking under boost. because of this, they won't have much power without a turbo. now, an 81 turbo was probably a B21FT, thats a pretty old engine with CIS injection and stuff... so was this swapped with a regular B21F, or B23F, or B230F? which fuel injection does it have, K-Jet/CIS or LH/EIS ?

Great question. I don’t know. I’ll have to research that. Thank you.

there's a paper label on the timing belt cover with the engine model/version... of course with age and hacking, this tends to fade and get shredded.

at least on the later B230F/FT engines, the turbo engine has the air filter box on the right/exhaust side, and the battery on the left/intake side, while the regular engine has these swapped, battery on the right side, air filter box on the left (thats the car's side, not your side as you face the engine from in front of the car...)

I'm not familiar with the B21FT used in the early 80s, however.
