1988 240 wagon Idles too high
My 1988 240 wagon Auto Idles too high after trying to diagnose a starting problem. It ended up being a 25 AMP FUSE for the fuel injection
Replaced it and the car turned on. But now it idles too high. I think I might of moved something around the LH throttle area. I could manually move the throttle pulley to set at normal idle but once I rev it stays at high. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO ADJUST? Is this a job for an experience mechanic? I do the basic maintenance on my car but I don't know If I should mess this though. Any help would be appreciated?

are you saying the throttle doesn't return to idle when you move it? then I'd be checking the throttle return spring, make sure the throttle cable isn't binding, etc etc. its also quite possible the throttle itself is gummed up inside, and needs to be taken off the car and degunked with some solvent and a toothbrush or whatever.
Yes, the throttle doesn't return to idle. Pierce, I'll check the spring. The car ran good before the non start issue so I doubt it would be all gummed out. I'll still check it out though. Thanks. Pierce, my volvo is here at my work place about 20 miles away from my house. Im driving my wifes car at the moment, can I drive the volvo home at high idle? Will it hurt anything? cause It's easier to work on the car at home. thanks
my biggest concern would be that it might stick at an even higher throttle setting, which would be bad. I think I'd closely inspect the throttle mechanism under the hood and try and figure out whats sticking, whether its before or after the 'drum' that the throttle cable pulls on. are the throttle cable and the transmission cable both evenly wrapped around the spirals on the 'drum' ?
I adjusted the hex fitting for the throttle cable and managed to get the idle to where it was before. Drove the car for about a mile. Car felt normal. I'll post something after I drive it home tomorrow.
ah, then I'd be looking under the gas pedal end of things to see if something is keeping the pedal from returning to its normal position. I believe 240 cruise control actuators are down there at the pedal, rather than under the hood like 740/940 cruise.
Your're right. Something is keeping the pedal from returning to its normal position. when I step on the pedal, and release I have to pull the pedal with my hands and the car returns to normal idle
Im gonna have to look into it some more tomorrow. Is there a cleaner I could use on the cable/outside of throttle body? Maybe that might help.

well, if you have to pull the throttle pedal up, then the problem is under the dash, NOT under the hood. as I said, I think 240's have the cruise control actuator under the dash, directly connected to the pedal, so if your car has/had cruise, I'd be looking at that. my daughter's 240, the cruise actuator cable rusted completely through and broke.
