1989 volvo 240 wagon rear axle issues
Hi! I am a new member but have had volvo 240's for years- this wagon unfortunately ran out of rear end lube and damage was done- refilled and drive now only up to 25 MPH - I am looking for a fix- either changing the whole axle assy. or finding someone to fix what is bad (bearings, gears- ?). I do have a 1988 5 speed that I am considering parting out for this- a shame but havent found another way yet- can someone tell me what vehicles Volvo made that had the same rear end assy. as this one? thanks, bob
I think all RWD Volvos made between 1955 and 1998 have the same rear end, if you don't care about ratios... Some 940/960 have limited slip but apart from that... Plenty of old 240 sitting around you can buy for a couple 'a hundred bucks.
the innards are the same, but the axle housing is quite different between 240 and 7/940, as the two use different thrust arm and suspension mounts. and of course, some 760/960 sedans are IRS so obviously those are different.
