1991 940gl 2.3i not enough fuel getting to injectors
Hi
It will start no problem but on Occasion refuse to start, this is overcome by pouring petrol dowm the return pipe on the pressure regulator.
We did some testing yesterday and found out that the injectors were not pumping out enough petrol into the engine
We removed the fuel rail with the injectors attached when cranking the engine and hardly any fuel came out of the injectors. We removed the spark plugs and the injectors then began to work perfectly.
We have figured out that the injectors were not getting enough power and there may be a power drain somewhere. The only parts of the car getting power on cranking should be the starter, coil and injectors.
We are pretty stumped any ideas would be welcomed. It has a new 65 ah battery
Thks
Rob

RE: 1991 940gl 2.3i not enough fuel getting to injectors
Hi
Thanks for the reply, it was strange as we thought this also but when the spark plugs were removed from the engine the injectors worked fine and pumped plenty of fuel.
It seemed as though the injectors were not getting enough voltage to open up and spray the fuel????
Cheers
Rob

The injectors are supplied voltage through the Radio Suppression Relay (on my car, mounted on the RF engine bay, near the battery). These have a circuit board inside, it's possible you have Voltage but not enough current is supplied.
The ECU supplies the signal (ground path) to pulse the fuel injectors. Are the ECU connectors tight, with good grounds?
Grounding is important to the fuel rail, on the two mounting bolts are lug terminals, these must be clean, as well as the mating surfaces.
Have you measured fuel line pressure, maybe your fuel pressure regulator is suspect. If you pull the vacuum line to the FPR can you smell gas?
Are the ends of the vacuum line to the FPR tight?
Just some thoughts!
