1993 940 steering column removal
Hey out there. Does anybody have a good link to removing a 1993 940 steering column? Chiltons and Haynes are useless. They think all 940's have tilt steering. I want to remove the complete key/lock assembly from the column, not just the cylinder. From what I can see it means removal of the column. But there's a problem. The column has to go inward(towards the engine) a few inches to be able to drop downward and clear the dash. But there's a small, hollow, threaded pipe or post on the downside of the column that fits into a hole in the brace that the column bolts to. And after unbolting from the brace the column still won't raise enough to slide that pipe out of that hole. Anybody ever done this?

Oh man. I managed to get one out of a junkyard 740 about a year ago and I unfortunately cannot offer any help, for it was absolute hell to figure this out. I pulled the steering column out from the front, not toward the engine though. Broke a lot on that car.. being a junkyard car I couldn’t care less though.
But I never got around to installing it into the car I got it for because I had no idea how I would get the old one out without destroying my beautiful wagon. I wish I had the answer for you. But sadly this is not a problem normally anyone has to deal with. I think this is where most people just junk the car and buy a new one.
I mean hell, I bought a new car cause of this whole steering column dilemma. Only difference is I’m too stubborn to let this 740 estate go so when I manage to get the job done I’ll make sure to document the process.
ps. I’m aware this reply is about 5 years too late but I’m writing this for anyone else like me and you who might need this information someday in the future.
