Loose Steering Column
I had the covers off the steering column last night on my '90 245 to get to the turn signal switch. While I was in there I noticed that the steering column has a little side to side movement. I can see the bolts that mount the steering column to the cross member and it is clear that this is where I need to tight it to eliminate the movement.
The problem is that these bolt heads don't have any drive feature or at least none that I can find. There are two of them, they are plated a gold color, they are button heads and are about 8 to 10mm. It looks to me like these were designed to go in at the factory and then the drive will break away with the specified torque.
This steering column has an air bag on it and a knee bolster below it. That makes it a bit different from the earlier 240's that may have a normal screw.
Is someone familar with these screws? Is it a breakaway drive type screw or is there some drive arrangement there that I can't see? Can these screws be tightened?
