My Volvo cranks but won't start after I've put new distributor cap, rotor button and coil on it
Do you have a spark at a spark plug?
(pull a wire off, use a long screw driver (or something thin with an insulated handle) stuck into the end of the plug wire, use your remote starter switch, have someone try to start the car while holding the metal object (with an insulated handle and not touching the car with your other hand) 1/4 inch away from something metal on the car. Do you see a spark? If so move onto the next step. If no spark, it's possible you did not push the rotor button on all the way and it's now broken. Did you put the wires on correctly? (hopefully one at a time)
it ran before you did this work? are you sure you hooked the side wires on the coil up in the correct order? power wire (probably blue) goes to pin 15 or (+), ignition timing signal and tachometer wires (probably white w/ red stripes) goes to pin 1 or (-) ?
sure you got the spark plug wires on the cap in the right ignition order? timing order is 1-3-4-2, where the frontmost cylinder is #1, and the rearmost is #4 ...
on the 940 cap, things are numbered like this (as seen from the inside of the cap)
those caps mount with the plug wires pointing to the right side, so top to bottom, its 2-1-3-4
Check your crank position sensor. It is located on the top of the bell housing where the engine and transmission mate. It has a fat black wire that goes to a connector on the firewall. If it has cracked or flaking insulation then it probably is going bad. Try wiggling it while someone cranks the engine and see if it starts. If it does then it definitely needs replacing.
no CPS == no spark OR fuel injection. so since the OP said he had spark, I doubt thats the issue.
Yeah - my thought is that it is perhaps intermittent and since the 940 distributor cap is up in the area where the CPS cable is located that fiddling with the spark plug wires may have jiggled the CPS cable as well.
