Default 240 engine issue

Hi, new to the site, been trying to get a response to a issue I'm having with our 92 240 Wagon.
It starts out fine when cold, five or ten minutes into warm up the motor will start racing for ten to fifteen seconds (no tach to know what rpm) then returns to normal briefly then it will start doing it again, if I turn it off when the idle is racing it's very hard to start but eventually fires up.
After it reaches operating temp all is fine
Anybody tell me what's up.....please!

Barclay

might be a sticky idle air controller, on a 20+ year old car, those almost always can do with a good cleaning out.
