240 Keys online cut from VIN
Hi! First time Volvo owner and long time Saab guy. I'm really enjoying the '89 240 sedan I just picked up and I'm looking for an extra set of keys.
Here's the thing, about 2 weeks ago I found a website (very basic looking, I think it was gray) that sold key blanks for $6-7, and for another $10 they'd be delivered cut from the VIN.
I've spent the last 3 hours searching the internet, and my own search history, and I can't find it.
Does anyone know what site I'm talking about, or one that offers the same service?

I answered your question.
Are you not looking for a spare set of keys to be made?
you can get that all at the locksmith and you don't need to give out any information.
they have all the blanks and usually will cut them for free...
I got mine for $12. two blanks and 2 cuts. They even cut a set I brought to them for free.
Those are really the only options out there. I personal, would not trust a website.
The website will have your address and car info. Doesn't seem very safe.
Not to mention it sounds like it's more money then going to a locksmith.
Hope it works out for you.

I asked about a specific situation (website offering keys cut by VIN), not just ways to get a spare set of keys. Perhaps I didn't make that clear, and that's my fault.
There are plenty of threads about going to locksmiths or a dealer, but not about this. I was just hoping to have another alternative available if I decided to go that direction, since I had found keys available that way before and simply forgot how I found it.
I hope I didn't offend you by wanting to research this further. I will most likely go to a locksmith when I find a reputable one.

the only people who could POSSIBLY have the VIN key database would be Volvo themselves. AFAIK, Volvo USA will NOT provide keys by VIN for older cars anymore.
Mercedes will, with less than a week turnaround, I just got 2 new keys for our recently purchased 1994 E320 wagon, the original keys were very worn looking.

you can ask, but I don't think they do that anymore. a *good* locksmith shop should be able to cut a key that will work by 'adjusting' for the wear. the hardware stores etc with the auto key machines, no chance.
you can get a new set of lock tumblers with new keys from Volvo, but thats a few $100 and a fair amount of busy-work to install. ignition, both front doors, trunk, glovebox. if its a wagon, there's also the floor panel.

THAT'S the point! Good call leer. If you go to a locksmith you'll get a duplicate of the worn out key you have NOT a new one with an unworn key pattern. Have you confirmed if the dealer will still provide them using the VIN? I'd love to get a new key for my '91 245.

most of this is all wrong.
There are people that rekey from VIN, creating an exact duplicate of the master key.
The posters telling OP to just get a duplicate worn key doesn't know anything about keys. XD
Old keys get worn, thus a new key duplicated from the old worn key is a waste of time and a bad thing to go around telling people to do.
I'm trying to find the person now. It's like $40 but having some trouble locating the person.
EDIT: alright, for you future people. go to or call the volvo dealers until you find one that will do it cheapest.
Some may demand proof of ownership so keep that in mind.
