Hello everybody.
I am ViesiS from Latvia and i am a bit of a volvo fan. I own xc70 2.4 turbo from 1999, 240 2.3 carburetor from 1989, 1996 volvo 850 2.4 10 valve, and my favourite 740 2.3 turbo. I own a 1985 Volvo with 2.3 turbo/intercooler B230ET Bosch Motronic engine in it. This car is special to me, because i own it for 8 years now and i bought it with my first paycheck after university, but sadly i droved only two years with it and then i had to put it away in a garage to fix it. But my fixing ended up with a complete rebuild of chasis, and ours of ours of welding, and now, after 6 years of fixing it i am allmoust done. But by putting in an engine i stept on a hughe problem. I have some rare flywheel with only one pin on its side and i did not mark any position of it, before takeing it of and i cant finde any information of how to set it right, and i hope someone could help me here, because i am desperate right now for a few months with this problem and dont know what to do. There is a picture with flywheel, so a This is my flywheel with only one pin on it side. Volvo is 2.3 B230ET Bosch Motronic.
ny ideas?
740 turbos up to and including 1989 used LH 2.2, which uses a hall sensor in the distributor for timing both the spark and fuel injection. 1990 (and 1991+ 940) used LH 2.4 which has a crank position sensor, and a whole bunch of timing marks on the flywheel. not sure what that pin is, it might just be a TDC marker ?
btw, LH was a 'jetronic' system, not 'motronic'. jetronic uses separate FI and Ignition controllers, while Motronic uses an integrated FI+Ignition control module. your 850 and v70 are likely Motronic, but all Bosch 240/740/940's I'm aware of were Jetronic.
I have Bosch Motronic, it is on a passenger side and there is an original volvo sticker in the engine bay that says, that this volvo has Bosch Motronic, and there are no hall sensor in distributor, I have 2 sensors by the flywheel. And there are no timing marks on flywheel, just that small pin. Car was runing prety good before i tooked engine out and replaced crankshaft seals and put it back in, but now, no start, just coughs in to the air intake. I have a good spark, good fuel pressure, and all timing marks on timing belt are correct, only problem is my flywheel.
I was trying this:
1. Set up cranckshaft on a TDC
2. Then turn engine back 90 degrees before TDC
3. Then put the flywheel back on so the pin is right on the sensor
4. But still no go......it fired up on 2 or 1 cilinders and thats it.
Maybe i have mixed up spark plug wires....!!!
And maybe someone can tell the right firing order on this, because i finde so many information in internet about firing order on these volvos, i am a bit confused.
Sorry about mistake, sticker in an engine bay says B230ET, but in the car......... there is a Bosch Motronic in passenger side Two sensors........ Flywheel off......and that pin for sensor is opposite from those two small pins on flywheels engine side Engine side, two small pins, did not see them before......... And someone before me has made some marks with white "pen" on flywheel, but i dont know if i want to trust them...... better view from gearbox side marks on a tming belt looks good to me lines up pretty good this is how i placed my spark plug wires
Any ideas how i should play this......
But this is for automatic gearbox and there are holes in that plate, i have no holes only one pin on flywheel side and 2 small pins on the engine side of the flywheel.
But, if i put engine on a TDC, where should that one pin piont at??
Hmmm.....i went total bannanas and tried every single one position of flywheel and stil no start. It loks that no matter how i place flywheel, it still sparks at wrong time. I just to have a problems with wiring, so it seems that i should check all wirings in engine bay again.
Maybe its because this was one of the first 2.3 turbos with motronic and a special order back in a day in Europe, but ...... as i said it looks that i have to check all my wirings, there must be a problem with some wires. Because there where some damaged wires in engine bay.....i will keep my christmas spirit in a garage this year
But you in USA should be happy, because you have so well equiped old volvos......thats a dream for me to get a Volvo 740 with leather seats, electric windows, air conditioner and all that good stuf, here in Europe it is different- jeah you can find an ET with motronic, but no extras, just bare bones with powerfull engine - like mine.
But thanks for info, i will keep on post of how i solve my problems.

There are still some '80's 740 in the US that are in excellent shape but they are usually non turbo. The leather interior in those cars are great, they are worse in the '90's models. The problem with the '80' 740 is the plastic, very brittle and falling apart, cracking dashboards, etc. Most of these were solved with the 940 cars which were ended in the US in 1995 but went on till 1998 in Europe and the rest of the world and had manual transmissions available which were not imported to the US since 1991. I look at the European sites and there are still great looking 940s in Germany especially but they are still expensive. I am tempted to import one or two of these as I personally love the 940... Regarding your problem, sorry we couldn't help you here, try turbobricks, mathews volvos, or the brickboard--they have much more knowledgeable gearheads there... Good luck!
