740 Diesel transmission swap
Hello, im looking for information about the 740 d24tic turbodiesel transmission swap options, currently i have the factory m46 Overdrive, but my problem is that its too short geared, and also problematic to maintain in my country.. (i have probably the last 2 liter trans fluid thats good for it(i cluld order from australia or Usa but its expensive for just 2liter fluid)) so i am looking for something thats already done and working, also obtainable in europe, my ideas would be getrag 420G 6speed or some ZF from a diesel Bmw preferably with a long final gear. If i find a good way to make this happen i will post the progress here in this thread
We would put 90w (diff oil) in those transmissions instead of the atf or 30w that was in them when the overdrive units would start to fail - to help them work longer. 90w was used in the old british cars that used that same overdrive - so I don't really understand your fluid availability problem. Isn't 90w differential oil (or 85w-90 etc) available worldwide?
I bet you will have a hard time finding any other transmission that will have a bellhousing that will bolt up to that VW 6 cyl engine. (in your Volvo)
If your overdrive has failed, it might be less expensive to send the overdrive off to be rebuilt rather than try to re-engineer a 35 year old car.
it takes type F or G ATF,dexron and macron types break it, i tried 75w-80 valvoline gear oil but that could damage the overdrive unit.. so my idea is to just swap it out for a proved capable trans thats more useable, longer than this i know its more expensive than rjust rebuilding the OD, but if i find someone that could rebuild it would be a challenge too..thats why would i choose the swap, cuz i want to keep the D24TIC engine for 2 reason, i like it a lot, its reliable and tuneable and for legal reason. so this is what i search information for.
most folks consider those VW based D24 diesels to be complete and total dogs, not at all reliable, subject to premature wearing out, etc. Thewy were based on the 1.6L 4 cyl VW diesels used on first generation Golfs (aka Rabbits in the USA), with two more cylinders added
The B230 normally aspirated gasoline engine used in both the 240 and the 740 were nearly indestructible with proper maintenance (mainly keeping the oil changed and the coolant filled). They are plentiful as compared to the diesel and the AW70 automatic transmission they were paired with were also very reliable. Sticking with the gas version is more reliable and has more parts that are readily available. This would be my choice of engine/transmission.
You are in Hungary - does Toyota sell cars there? BUY ONE if you want a reliable, cheap to maintain car that 's easy to fix. Most European cars cost much more to maintain and are less reliable than a Toyota. A ~30 year old Volvo diesel would not be a good choice. Or buy a car that you see thousands of driving around - there will be people that know how to fix them and there will be parts supply chains for them, both new and used parts.
