740 Power Steering Fluid
1990 - 740
I'm topping up the power steering fluid on my 1990 740 16 valve. All my manual tells me is "Type F". The only "Type F" I recall is transmission fluid and my local car parts shop doesn't have that. Is there a specific fluid to use?
I've grown fond of my old friend and I want to use the correct fluids.
Many thanks;
Rob

Type F is still available, mainly because there are a lot of cars that use it in their power steering. I get mine at Wal-Mart. As usual though, Swift is right; the Dexron will work and is certainly easier to find.

Yup... I use Dexron in my own 740 16- valve!
oh, and if you've truly grown fond of your old friend... here's a little 16- valve advice. Stop me if you've heard this already, but if not... change your timing belt and balance shaft belt. Religiously. Every 50,000 miles- and you should change the idlers and tensioners, as well, plus the oil pump gear bolt. Yes, this is expensive on the 16- valve engine, and the parts can be hard to track down, but it's not as expensive as a valve job. The 16- valve engine is a good engine, but it's real picky about having a good timing belt that's been correctly installed.
