I recently bought a beautiful 1990 740 wagon with a sunroof. Problem is the sunroof opens once in a while but will never close. I suspected a bad motor and replaced it. But still will not work. Do any of you have any experience with this problem?

Does it seem well aligned? In other words, when it does move, I assume you can move it manually,does it open symetrically on both sides, or is it crooked? If misaligned, you have to drop the headliner and replace the tracks-big job! Or it may be a matter of greasing the tracks, andthe cables, as much as possible, with light oil like WD40. This may do it. I ve seen many a Volvo with roofs which were never lubed, and with years of disuse they get gummed up and stuck.

 

I have a 1988 740 that has the same problem. I can open mine about6 inches and still close it, but anywhere past that and I have to open up the mechanism and close it manually. The mechanic told me that the mechanism that stops the motor was the problem, but it wasn't worth replacing it.
