Default 88 240 water pump tip and question

hi all,
i just changed my water pump, and the hardest thing about it is fighting the rubber gasket on top to get it flush with the block to line the holes up to get the bolts in. i tried to angle it first and get the bolts on loosely but the rubber gasket looked out of place and would get mangled if i tightened it. easiest way i found was to use a bar and jack to apply pressure and secure it with your foot. hope this helps someone, lol

also have a question, the old part has a plastic rubbery piece on the bottom, and the new OEM one doesn't, what is it for? (pics attached)

The rubber pad is just for that purpose, but not all that necessary...

Volvo green book says use a large screw driver and pry it up against the alternator. Your method look pretty slick.

yea, i was like...pry it against what? there's no room and hard to get leverage because of the angles of the water pump. also that's a lot of force needed to get that lined up...
