I have an 89 740, yesterday, when I attempted to put the shift in park, the shift simply slides back and forth and will not go in any gear! please help!

 

Sounds like the linkage is disconnected or broken.

Look under the left side of the transmission and see if you can see the linkage on the side of the transmission. You may be able to see the problem.
