How much play fore/aft should there be in the the harmonic balancer? I know it's not the crank or the crank pulley. It's moving far enough back to rub on the cover for the timing belt.

How do I pull it. I assume at first glance that I remove the bolt and us a puller.

Heres how I did mine, disconnect ignition coil.
Put wrench on crank bolt and brace it against the car frame, blip the starter for a second and the bolt can be removed by hand. Work the pulley off with 2 screwdrivers .

Worked, except the screw drivers. The 7lb sledge didn't work either. Nor did the 3' crow bar. but my 94 E350 did.......

You might be a red neck if.....[&:] you attach a come-a-long to the trailer hitch of your van and around the crank pully and start pulling.
Had enough tention on the line that the whole wagon slid in the grass. I was going to take a picture but one good hit with the sledge and that pully came flying off.[:-]

O-well that jobs done and I have a great story to boot.
