Default 90 240 AT tranny slips in 1st gear

How to describe this…sometimes, not always, when in drive, 1st gear slips, sometimes it slightly slips in 2nd. She slips more in 1st gear. The engine kinda lags when in 1st gear as well. When she is in 3rd or 4th, everything is very smooth, no problems what-so-ever. Acceleration is awesome in 3rd and 4th gears.

A really close friend who works on cars, asked her neighbor, who happens to be a tranny expert, said that it sounds like it needs a “1st gear clutch pack”, which is $200 where he gets his tranny parts.

Should I just take her to AAMCO and have her checked out? I am really scared I may need a new tranny altogether.

Any thoughts?

Never heard of replacing a clutch pack on an Aisin Warner...usually just replace the whole tranny...but before doing that have your kickdown cable checked and adjusted properly and make certain you are not low on ATF fluid. If all that is ok then proceed with a complete flush and change your tranny filter out. If none of that works..new tranny

Rosy, there are precious few people who will work on the innards of an AW70 transmission, which is what your car has. I would certainly do the maintenance stuff mentioned in the last post before I dropped a bundle. I would not spend $200 on a clutch pack. Then you'll have new parts mixed w/ old parts and in 6 months you'll be faced w/ either doing it yet again or replacing the transmission at that time. If flushing etc. doesn't help, locate a low miles used transmission. They sell for 100-300 bucks.

Default Tranny flush seems to have solved my slipping gear issue

So, I used a conditioner/cleaner for the tranny on Thursday. Friday we did the tranny flush. Low and behold, she runs just fine! Although there is still a very slight lagging in 1st or 2nd gear (can't tell which one).

Wow, her power is back!

check and make sure your kickdown cable is adjusted correctly. Also, I would replace the filter if the fluid was filthy and you saw any metal or residual while flushing...do not put conditioner/cleaner in again...will only harm not fix anything...sometimes in manual tranny's if there is a slight grind into gear the Lucas proiduct works ok but otherwise just a waste of money. Good luck and glad she's workin again
