Default '90 244 AC loud click

I happened to have switch on the AC on my 244 today after quite a long time. There was a big click (about 3 times louder than the usual ones when the compressor kicks in). Now the AC does not cool anymore. It does not clutch in. However, I can move the face of the clutch with my hands and it does not seem to offer much resistance (kinda free-wheels).

Any clue what might have happened?

Thanks!

The A/C should be run every couple of weeks whether you need it or not. The free wheeling compressor is normal when not engaged. Not sure what the big click was but does the compressor engage now when turned on? Does the system have refrigerant?

It does nor engages anymore. I think it should have refrigerant (it used to cool pretty well back in Autumn). How can I check for refrigerant level?

Thanks!

Sounds like it is low on freon. The low pressure switch will not let the compressor turn on . Put a gage on the system to see if it is low or empty. If empty then you have a major leak if just low give it a quick charge.
