So Im rocking a '94 940 sedan and I want to make a few changes to be different and stand out a bit. For some reason I think the car will look 'cool' with a small lift and some aggressive all-terrain tires. Obviously no lift kit for a 940 exists so I am looking to piece together something and I have several questions.

1) At stock height, what is the largest tire OD that will fit in the fender wells. I am not sure what wheel size I want to go with, so does anyone know what the largest size I can fit without rubbing?

2) How closely related are the xc70 and the 940? If the springs are the same dimension (diameter) maybe I could just swap some junkyard spring on. Or are there any other volvos whose springs would fit and hopefully be longer?

3) Anyone have the stock spring dimensions for a 940? I am currently in a different country than my car so I cannot measure. Perhaps I can find a junkyard spring that will work.

I believe your wheel size would be no less than 16 inches.....but not familiar with the 940...
try the spring spacers and it will give you about 2 inches and they are easy to slip on the spring...some guy used the metal spring spacers and spot welded to make sure they stay in...but you can buy the neoprene(rubber) ones at a parts store.

the XC70 family of cars are /completely/ different, they are front wheel drive transverse engine cars that have an added auxilliary rear axle drive, and the suspension is implmeneted totally differently.

a 940 probably has 15" rims, although there were a few optional 16" rims (my 92 740 has the Hydra 16x6.5 rims).

the 195/65-15 or 205/55-16 stock tires fit these cars really nicely. putting it on a lift kit would be /meh/ awful in terms of road handling.

if you really wanted to lift a 940, I think you'd want to lower the front suspension arm pivot points, use a custom steering rack, and drop the rear axle relative to the trailing arms and frame (by default, a 940 axle is above the rear trailing arms). this way you'd retain the same distance of suspension travel.

the result would be a top heavy car that would sway badly on fast turns.

Yeah, there is a good reason for that.

 

If you are curious to see how your 940 would feel with a small lift with the tires you want ....with out welding or expensive parts and be able to easilie move back to original suspension....buy the cheap 12 dollar spring spacers that just slap on and off so you won't have to screw your ride up...YOUR IDEA IS UNIQUE AND SHOWS CREATIVITY but of course there are a lot of concerns on safety and a lot of fab and money involved.

 

the stock Boge/Sachs Automatic shocks don't like being lifted (or lowered), as their valving is engineered around the stock ride height, and they change their damping based on the range of travel.
