Default 93 240 Wagon Pulley Belt Removal Did Search help

93 Volvo 240 Station Wagon. has a 4cyclinder B230F eninge. have AC/PS - Ok here s my issue. I had a shop change out the alternator bushings a few weeks ago. They didnt change my alt/waterpump belts. Belts got shredded on the FWY yesterday. Now I need to change the two aternator and waterpump belts. I purchased the OEM Volvo 973537-4 Matched set of belts. Ive looked and searched all over the internet also have my basic bentley manuel but everything I find is really vague as to how to change the belts. So Far I know that I need to take off the Pulley belt /starter belt to get the alt/water belts on. I did find a tutortial on replacing the camshaft belt i partially followed the tutorial . This is where Im at

1. I removed the fan and fan hub. 2nd I removed the fan shroud. The 93 model has torx heads to remove the plastic fan shroud.
Now i have the crankshaft pulley exposed. This pulley doesnt have the two bolted pieces like the older pulleys . its just one pulleyand a large crankshaft bolt. Im stuck here. Question what do i Do to remove the crankshaft belt ? Loosen/remove the crankshaft bolt? or do I loosen the tensioners and the the pivot points on both the starter and the power steering? I need pics if anyone can help out ? Just to make sure the pivot point /tensioner for the water pump is near the distributor and the power steering is on the top side ?

Why did the belts shred? Are they misaligned? You can EYEBALL the alignment from the side, see how things line up. Don't touch the crankshaft bolt. You have to loosen the A/C compressor to get that belt off. What do you mean by the "starter"? Starter is nowhere near the belts! You have to loosen all tensioners which can be a pain, especially the A/C... Make sure that things are loose to the point where the belts can be put OFF/ON freely.
From memory, the pulley on the crank is a double, as is the water pump. One belt goes UP to the alternator, one belt goes to the right to the A/C compressor, also a double, and a belt goes off the A/C compressor UP to the P/S pump.

To answer the belt shred . I had bad alt bushings. Alt would bounce around with the two belts. After the repair didnt change out the parts, sorry yes its the av compressor not the starter. Ok so I managed to loosen up the PS but the compressor is still not loose I'm going to unscrew the compressor tensionor more. I loosened the pivot point on the compressor. Maybe some of the bolts that hold to bracket? Push towards engine to loosen belt? I'm glad I'm on the right track thank you. Any pics will help. Also one question on the alt bracket . Me facing the engines. The bracket attaches to the engine is there supposed to be a bushing at the top bracket where the alt attaches to the engine?

Also I checked the water pump . I spin the propellar on the water pump & it squeeks . No water is coming out of the seep hole. But the squeeking is noticeable. Is the waterpump going bad? Engine has 117,000 miles. Im the second owner. I checked the service manual. 40k mile service. No record of water pump replacement . I had no issues of overheating or any noise before my alt belts broke. It does squeak .I just check this morning the squeek seemed to be less but its still there. My alt belts broke on the fwy. So the car did heat up enough to seep water through my radiator hoses. Radiator hoses will be replaced. I have no idea when that waterpump was replaced. Thanks for the help.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/56871527@N03/7432856380/ Here is a picture of the alternator .Is there supposed to be a bushing where the bracket attaches to the engine in the front. Spot between the alt and the waterpump? Right now there s a bolt inside but it seems like there s supposed to be a bushing there? please see pic.

It seems to be ok shape. Now Im concerned about the water pump squeaking. right now Im going to try to loosen the ac compressor tensionoer some more to see if i can move the compressor. I was thinking of maybe just removing the underneath engine cover . and just jacking up the compressor towards the engine? so i can remove the belt? THanks for the help

I loosened the ac compressor pivot point /adjuster and i also loosened the two 12mm bolt that attach to the bracket on the engine side. Im using a large 4foot breaker bar to pry the compressor towards the engine and i still cant get the belt off. Its loose but nowhere loose enough to remove the belt. it seems like I will need to loosen the other two bolts on the bracket towards the drivers wheel well. these two bolts are tough to get to. I may have to remove the underneath plastic . Im not doubting you its just a pain. I may have to just pull the pulley bolt? remove the pulley and belt? From what Ive read to remove the pulley bolt . I need a nylon rope or a IPD locking crankshaft bar? any help would be appreciated. thanks.

I ended up loosening the ac compressor bolts on the bottom & the tensioner .I took the under plastic cover off. Jacked underneath the ac compressor bracket. Used a 5ft crowbar wedged towards the passenger side & finally had enough slack on the belt to slip off the crankshaft pulley! Once done I ended up replacing the crankshaft pulley belt with the same Gates belt. It was cracking inbetween the ribs. I used compressed air to blow out the dust/junk in the timing belt and closed it up. I couldn't get the oem volvo belts over the alt/water pump / crankshaft I ended up loosening the alt tensionor 10mm bolt and that did the trick. From this point. I tightened everthing up. Pivot points/ tensioners on all three alt/ ac compressor and ps pump. Checked my belt tightness . Good. Next step fan shroud installs. It's a T-25 Torx for the two screws. I cleaned up the fa n shroud before install. Then attach water pump fan. I suggest here on buying replacement M6 or 10mm bolts IPD carries them. These bolts get mucked up pretty quick. Tighten up 10mm bolts here. You want to do a crosspattern here. Finally done. I ended up not changing out my waterpump. It wasn't leaking. And the squeaking went away. I did Change the oil & also the coolant. Test drove great ! No issues
