Default 940 Cluster woes

The speedometer previously was jumping on my 92 940 turbo sedan, so I removed it and gave it a good once over "inspection" for any obvious bum solder joints and found none. I put it back in and it worked fine.. This led me to believe perhaps a plug was corroded or loose.

Well, now the speedo died completely and the overdrive light does not work as well. So I decided to look into a pro shop repair. I got a quote from Southern Electronics in VA for 275 total parts and labour, including a one year hassle free warranty.

I think I'm going to go this route, but I was wondering if anyone here has used these folks to get work done, and if they did a good job.

I'm aware one could go over all the solder joints and such, but I'm all thumbs and like the idea of a warranty if someone else messes things up.
Hollander says only 91 and 92 740 and 940 turbo clusters will swap. I cant find another so I may as well bite the bullet and get it fixed for real. Any experiences you could pass along would be great, thanks!

Cheers,
Mike

I had a different problem with my 740. I would be doing 90 mph with the transmission in park. What I have found out is that when Volvo came out with the cars that year, they had sub-par electronic parts. My circuit board on the back was corroded (and still is, will get that done soon) but the main problem was the capacitors being bad. But $275 from someone that does that sounds better than what I have seen for my car (about $300-350).

Or...pull one from a salvage car. The vast majority of these cars go to the scrap yard with functioning speedos.

Unfortunately there is only one turbo car in the yard.. It's an 87. I wonder if a swap year (91-92) na dash would work, lacking only the mechanical boost gauge? I'm installing an aftermarket boost gauge anyway. Any word on this option? Thx.

Cheers, mike

I don't see why it wouldn't. Probably best to study the connectors on the back side first. And...if they are constructed like the earlier version (83-89), there will be a knock out to install your existing factory boost gauge.

Just swap the speedo! You don't need the whole panel. All 1991-92 740/940 will interchange just fine...

BTW, they ALL have a TACH unless by some fluke you run into a Euro model.

And normally the speedometer would have the odometer on it as well, so if you get a speedometer from a salvage yard, you will have to adjust the odometer and file the proper paper work to the Department of Transportation (or something like that).

don't turbo and non-turbo and abs vs non-abs have different tone rings?

The difference is only between abs and non-abs. Pretty sure abs was standard by 91, certainly by 92.

The mileage disclosure only applies to models LESS than 10 years old. Nobody cares about cars as old as 1992s...

I browsed the california vehicle code sections on this.... It appears to me (I am not a lawyer) the DMV doesn't need the mileage on registration papers on vehicles over 10 years old, however, the laws regarding speedometer changes, and putting a sticker on the door frame if the speedo is incorrect have no such 10 year limit.

every states vehicle code specifics vary some

Cars 10 years old are EXEMPT from mileage reporting.

Still, with Carfax and such, the mileage gets reported ***** nilly but it is nor required. For resale purposes mainly you don't want to have a car that had 200k, then 150k.. doesn't look good.
