Question 940 random stalling with Emission warning light

Hi there, I'm a newby so I hope I've got the right part of the forum for this question.....

I have a 940 Estate, 2.l Turbo, 1992, 4 sp manual with electronic OD, 114k miles. Intermittent stalling problem. She'll suddenly stall, at idle and at speed, no rough running prior to stall just suddenly stalls. 90% when this happens the Emission warning light comes up and stays up for various lengths of time - always goes out after a period (sometimes will stay on for 2 or 3 journeys).

After stalling she always restarts, usually this takes a few turns of the key (a bit like fuel starvation ????). This happens so intermittently that it's hard to factor all the variables i.e. happens come rain or shine, long or short journey, can happen two or three times on a short run then nothing for a few days then happens once and not again for days ?????

I use her nearly every day but only covered 5k miles in the last year. I've owned her for a year and she's been very well looked after prior to this with full Volvo servicing every year from birth. I've had her fully serviced a year ago and she's in for full service today with local non-Volvo garage who are excellent (just had MOT - only failed on a couple of bulbs). The random nature of this makes it very difficult to fault find as, of course, it never happens when I'm with a mechanic !! Any ideas please - I'm thinking sensors on emmission control system - but would this cause a sudden stall ??? Any help / guidance gratefully recieved - Andy

this is the B200FT engine? or B200ET or what? we never got the 2.0 T stateside, just the B230FT.

a flakey fuel pump relay certainly could do this. so could a dying fuel pump.

It is the B200FT - I'll try the relay change first - many thanks sicnarf and pierce - let you know as things progress - thanks again for advice - I'm no mechanic but have a reasonable knowledge re: things electric / mechanical etc - some say a very dangerous thing !!! Andy. PS it's real sunny over here in blighty, in August, unheard of, maybe that's confused everything !!!

I'd look at the Crankshaft Position Sensor... A fuel injection relay is not likely to stall the car, usually it will cause no starts...

do you know if this B200FT uses LH 2.2 or 2.4 injection? indeed, the CPS or its wiring is a major candidate if its an LH2.4 car. LH2.2 didn't use this. if it was an american 1992 B230FT it would definitely be 2.4, but I dunno about UK.

if its a LH2.4 car, the Air Flow Meter's Bosch partnumber will end in -016, if its LH2.2, it will be -007.

Default Update 1

Hi again,

Right, step 1 - I've removed and inspected Fuel relay (looks fine) anyway I resoldered all connections to eradicate any "dry" joints. Car starts and runs AOK (so I haven't ballsed it up) will see if stalling re-occurs.

If this happens I'll change the relay for new then, if still no good, I'll change out the crankshaft position sensor (thanks lev).

By the way she's now fully seviced and MOt'd for another year and of course the fault didn't manifest itself while she was in the hands of the garage !!.....

Ta again - Andy

On the CPS (crank position sensor), the problem most frequently is the insulation of the wiring cracking and falling off after years of being drenched in oil dribbles, and being stuck down behind the head where it gets hot.

Hi Pierce, Air Flow Meter Part No ends -016 so it's LH 2.4. Ta - Andy

I've had a quick look at the sensor wiring and it looks very good with the original rubberised protection cover still intact and no signs of insulation breaking up. I'll see what happens over the next few days and replace if fault re-occurs.

Many thanks for all the great help - Andy
