Default 940 volvo battery

I went to take my battery out to go get it charged at advanced auto and to my fu....n surprise I couldnt take it out. On one side they have a metal post thats weld up against the battery and on the battery tray they have a groove where the lip of battery is tucked under it. I suppose its so people dont steal your battery but did they ever consider you yourself might want to remove it.

I was so aggravated......Joe

p.s. Finally got a jump when my neighbour got home 5 hours later. After i got it jumped the abs light came on and stayed on...Did i fry my air bag system and if so do you need that to pass inspection?

There should be a couple of removeable lugs that lock the battery in place using the cast bevelled ledge formed around the sides of the battery near the bottom.

The "metal post" must be rusted in place--assume you are talking about the attachment rod that sticks up in next to the core support and secures the hold down plate? Use a screwdriver through its rounded top to force it to unscrew it, usually it works...
ABS will stay on or flicker if the voltage is off, as will the SRS system, computers you know... Doubt you "fried" anything a new battery won't be able to fix.

on my 92 740 (virtually a 940), the battery is held down by a sliding plastic block that holds that flange at the base of the battery. you slide it to the right(?) and the battery is free.

our 240 is the same way.

You must have something 'home made". All 740/940 have the battery secured by means of a hold down plate which has a hole through which a threaded rod screws it into the battery tray.

Guess there are different fixing types?

Pierce and myself were describing the system shown on this attached link.
(scroll down to pics)
It is a correct system for a number of models and rspi's video series also covers it as I recall.

There are different types on different models Volvo.
That post refers to a FWD types.
740/940 batteries attach only the way I describe: long rod that screws vertically into a plate that clamps down the lower lip of the battery.

ohgeez, eat my own words, yer right. musta been our 850 that had the sliding block clamp, my 92 740T has the screw shaft as the battery is way far down too close to the headlight to even reach a slide clamp like I thought.

hey, both cars are volvos, both are silver or grey, both are wagons, both are turbos. ok, both are completely different under the hood, but it had been awhile.

Default Rusted rod screws for holding battery in place

Hey there, the rod screws (in a Volvo wagon that's been sitting still for years) are rusted over. What would you recommend I try to get this loose so I can pull the battery out? I'm trying PB Blaster...but haven't had any luck yet. Got any tips?

You can try PB Blaster or like, if it fails just break the rod off--it should snap off at the base. Just use a long screwdriver to leverage the twist in he eyelet on the top of the rod.
