Brakes failing

Default Brakes failing

okay so recently my breaks have gotten really squishy and go to the floor and sometimes holds the pressure and sometimes doesn’t i think it’s a bad master cylinder because i don’t see any visual leaks and so i bled the brakes today in case somehow an air bubble has made its way into the system and all bled really good except the passenger rear which i can not get all the air out of it i want to make sure it’s bled good and properly before i replace the master cylinder to make sure i’m not wasting money all the help is appreciated

Did you try a power bleeder? That will really help, particularly when you are doing the master (which my bet is ready to be replaced - particularly if you have no signs of leaks at any of the wheels or long lines.

i haven’t tried one yet i was trying to find someone i know with one so i can borrow it and i don’t care to replace the master it’s just if i don’t need to i won’t and also i saw a little bit of fluid on the lines when i was bleeding them but i sprayed brake cleaner prior to seeing it so im waiting to see if it was cleaner or fluid

you don't mention what car this is for, but if it has ABS, bleeding is more complicated and takes longer.

sorry my bad it’s a 1991 240 without abs i’m pretty sure

if it has ABS, there would be a pretty obvious block of metal, plastic, and pipes clearly labeled ABS, in the engine compartment just aft of the battery or the airbox.... like this...

oh, pre ABS 240's have a 'dual triangular' braking system, there's *SIX* brake circuits you have to bleed, two at each front wheel, and one at each rear.

the ABS cars have a standard dual diagonal braking system, with just 4 total circuits.

mine has 8 bleed valves? one on each rear and 3 on the front calipers and mine is not abs

Huh, the pre ABS 240s I've seen only had 2 bleeders on each front, one for each brake circuit.

i could be wrong but i have three on each front it could be something else but i could have sworn it’s three bleeder valves

You are not wrong. The late 240 with ABS have only one bleed valve, the earlier non ABS have the multiple valves...

ok thanks do you know how to bleed them i would assume PR DR PF DF but on the front calipers what order would i do the bleeder valves

good stuff here, if your front brake calibers have the dual hoses, follow the non-ABS instructions.

  • Bleed master cylinder first
  • On Volvo models with 3 bleeder screws on the front calipers: LR, LF top, RR, RF top, LF two bottom bleeders, RF two bottom bleeders (per Bentley)
  • Highly recommended: use a pressure bleeder as noted below at Brake Pressure Bleeder
