Default A/C nightmare

About a year ago i purchased my '82 244 GL. I am very very happy with it overall and the car has very few problems. The biggest thing is that the A/C has never worked. With summer getting into full swing i took it down to a local A/C specialty shop to get it assessed to see if i could get it working again. They spent two hours inspecting my system and the diagnosis was that i have leaks all over the place (in the compressor, the drier and in the discharge line) they said to get it up and running properly again i would basically need to rebuild the whole system at a cost of about $1000. I asked if it would be any cheaper to convert to R-134 from my R-12 system and he said it would be a little cheaper but i have a small compressor and because R-134 is less efficient it would make the compressor run at hugher pressure and lend it to breaking down again. So right now i am in quite a bind. Does anyone know a way i can fix it for cheap. Is there anything else i can do to get it up and running decently without spending a grand on it? Thanks in advance,
-Nick-

Buy your parts from a place like this.

Install what you can. Take the rest to your local A/C shop for the rest. That should cut down on your parts and labor.

Yea that's my plan for now do it the old fashioned way.
I'll look into buying some new stuff myself if it's cheap enough otherwise it just isn't worth the money to me.

Either do it yourself or roll down the windows. that is unless you don't mind around 1000.00, Which is quite a pinch.[sm=itsok.gif]

Lucky bastard. Lol. Wish mine was the blower motor. i know those are a real pain to replace but it would be cheaper and i would feel totally comfortable doing that myself.
