I have a 1992 Volvo 240 wagon and I'm trying to do a clutch, I have all the bolts out starter off shifter out and the transmission is separated from the engine but the part of bell housing where the starter goes in its hitting the firewall so i cant pull the trans far enough back to drop

 

i'm remembering pulling the radiator, and the top cross brace above the radiator, then pulling the engine+tranny *forward* to lift out with a hoist, then separating them. but its been ages.

 

you can't be serious the engine has to be pulled

 

No. Try tilting the transmission, it should work without moving the engine...

 

I got the transmission titled back as far as it can be
