Default Deforst constols not working 1989 245

My 1989 240 wagon is a great car. But, it is finally starting to show its age. Air still comes out the dash vents. However, I can not get air to come out the defoster. None of the 3 air direction buttons do anything.
Are these electric or vacume? My repair manual does not go into the
vent controls. Can anyone tell me where the switches are located and how to trouble shoot them? Thanks Don

Hi Don. The default position for the 240's HVAC is out of the dash vents. Nothing is happening w/ the three buttons because the VACUUM operated doors aren't seeing any vacuum. since you get no response at all, I'd check the main vacuum hose on the intake manifold that supplies vac to the controls. It will pass thru the firewall and probably have a one way check valve to it. It's probably come off or rotted. If that isn't the issue then you will need to pull the center console's side pieces and take a peek at the individual hoses. It looks like an octopus behind the vent controls with all the vac hoses. I have a diagram of the proper hose arrangement if it's come loose.

Thanks - I will look for the main vacume source first. Don

Default Got it

That was it.... Vacume line under the hood had to breaks in it. Replaced it with 7/65" vacume line from advance auto. Bingo!!! All it takes is someone like swiftjustice44 to point a newby in the right direction.
THANKS

Hey you're quite welcome! Glad it was an easy fix! When you have time, you should probably take a look at the other vac lines. After 20 years, they probably are all a little puny.
