Diagnosing a worn out 740 gearbox
Hi friends;
I have a 1987 740 GL wagon which has served well so far.
How would I tell that my gearbox needs replacement? I've been hearing a whining noise somewhere below the gear lever at low speeds and I am sure it is not front wheel bearings as I already had those replaced.
Could it be the gearbox? Apart from the noise gears shift and engage okay; but I would not want to wait until a complete failure.
Any advise is much appreciated.

this is a manual transmission? does the noise change if you put the clutch in? does it change if you're in neutral and let the clutch out? is it different if you, say, shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd at said low speed ? does it change in tone with road speed, even if you're in neutral with the engine idling ?
