Default Driver side door handle

My 83 240 GLT wagon is doing just great, however, the driver side door handle
pulled out this morning. I can't seem to actually get it to mate flush to the door.
Is this a terminal blow? It can line up and look mostly ok, but then the slightest bit of pressure pulls it out.

This is before i pull up and re-seat it. It's---natural state if you will.

been awhile since I've taken one of those apart, but I think that part that fits into the door has like a 'T' end, and you have to rotate the whole handle assembly 90 degrees to get this "T" to fit into the slot in the door... maybe you could fab something from a bit of appropriate thickness aluminum, screwed onto the end of the handle, and filed/ground to fit into the key slot ?

Yeah, I was just looking at it again and it does seem like the rotation is all wrong.
Oof. That sounds like a good way to spend a saturday.

The metal on the door where the handle inserts may be distorted. You may be able to straighten it once you have the panel off and see the damage...
