I have a 91 740 non-turbo 2.3 that has major engine failure.
My solution to quickly get it back on the road was to buy another engine.
Found one for sale near me.
The owners description: 1990 Volvo 240 DL R230 engine+auto trans
Would this engine and transmission use the same mounts?
Any compatibility problems? I recall something about two different ignition systems on the 2.3
Does anyone know other models that have compatible engines?

No compatibility problems. As easy a swap as you can get. The 740 has a rear mounted distributor, the 240 a front mounted one but that shouldn't be a problem. You can leave it in place or swap it. My 94 940 has a front mounted distributor from the factory.
