Smile Fuel Guage Issue

HELP and Thank you!
1994 Volvo 940 NA

My speedo gauge has not been working so last week I finally installed a new gauge cluster from eBay (1991 940)

And on this new used gauge cluster, the fuel gauge always read empty, so I swapped it out for the '94 one that I knew worked. Except now, the fuel gauge is always reading full. When the car is off the needle falls back to nothing, when the car is on the needle always reads full.

Can anyone tell me what the wiring is supposed to look like? the gauge must be receiving a signal if its reading full, but is there a resistor somewhere that regulates the signal that I'm missing?

Thank you!!!!!!
Eric

'91 doesn't fit '94.
'91-'92,
'93-'94,
'95

I believe the circuit boards are different.
Is the speedometer working right with the '91 panel?

thats what I was thinking - circuit boards change almost yearly along with the speedo heads

Well,
The speedometer is closer to working because even though it's not reading speed, it's illuminated the ABS light, and it made me look at the rear speed sensor in the diff, which the wires coming from it don't have a good connection, so i'm going to fix those next.

but back to the fuel gauge..
Is the actual gauge that sits in the cluster of the '94 different than the '91? should I swap them back and try again?

thanks for your help!

Yes, the '94 speedo is different from the '91! They look very different in the back (I have both). I don't think you can make it work, that's why I asked you if the speedo was working, the gas gauge is another problem. I have never attempted to adapt the speedos, I get them in the corresponding years I listed in my previous post. Now, anything is possible but in this case I am not aware of anyone succeeding in the swap you are attempting.

None of the gauges are a problem because I swapped the entire gauge cluster. All the connectors still fit 94 to 91. The only gauge I swapped was the fuel gauge. When I have the '91 in it always reads empty, when I have the '94 in it always reads full. Now I know the gauges work because they move and drop when i turn the car on or off. and I have no idea why, there must be some screw/ ground i'm missing..
