Default Help with A/C belt tension

I am having a difficult time figuring out how to tighten the darn ac belt tension. I have a 1983 240 GL (B23f) and I dont have any adjusting brackets. I am pretty sureI have the split pulley thing. I am not quite sure how go about changing the pulley width. Do I have to unbolt the whole thing and fiddle with it or can I do it while it is in the car.... The repair manual is really vague and there are no guides on how to do it. Perhaps I should get the bently manual (is that better?).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
chris

You need to remove the outer section of the crankshaft pulley. There are shims between the pulley halves for the A/C section. Remove a shim to bring the halves closer together and tighten the belt. Or add a shim to bring the halves farther apart and loosen the belt. Any extra shims should be stored on the outside of the pulley in case they're needed later.
