How do you bypass the neutral safety switch in a 240 with A/T?
Hello, I am working on a 88 or 89 240 wagon that wont turn over at all. I replaced the starter and nothing changed. My best assumption is the neutral safety switch is bad, but I don't have the time/resources/parts available to replace it at this time. I have found a few post about bypassing this switch which will allow the car to start. Can anyone provide me with some good instructions on where I locate the wires to jump? is it at the starter or the switch itself? Colors and/or pictures would be greatly beneficial if available! If not, a good description will help me get started and I should be able to figure out the rest. Thanks.
The location of the switch is under the cover of the shift stick. Once you remove that, look to the right of the shifter. There are a couple of screws to undo, then you must wrestle the switch out. The switch is kind of triangular looking, and has a white pointer sticking out of it. When mine was bad, I bent back all the Metal tabs to try and clean it, but I ended up breaking mine. So, I used the white pointer, lined it up to the contacts as though it were in park, and my car could start.
I ended up just running a lead from the battery and another from the spade on the starter for the neutral safety switch into the car through the fire wall and plugged it into a push button switch. Works for now, just turn the key on and hold the button down!
Haha... When mine was broken, I had to line the pointer up just right while holding the key to start. It was somewhat tedious! A button is upscale compared to what I had haha. Anywho I fixed it. Got a switch off of FCPEuro.

for future reference, the park/neutral safety switch should have a plug along the side of of the tranny hump forward of the shifter, you could unplug it there and jumper the wires together.
