Default identifying steering rack

Just got a 1989 740gl wagon. There is no power steering. ENded up finding the leak and its in the rack. Im going to go to the boneyard since they have a lot of them there and get another unit. I did som esearching and found ou tthat there were 2 units used. a ZF and a CAM unit. What it the ways to tell the difference? vin number? prod year?
Did they use certain models for certain years?
Are the steering racks interchangable?
The autopart stores only list one type available. Kia did that with some parts of their cars and you have to go by vin production number to get the right part. The help will be much appreciated.

Default RE: identifying steering rack

I believe the racks are interchangable but the lines that attach to the rack just need to be swapped around.(Positions)
The ZF rack has big rubber bushings on the end of the inner tie rod boot. The cam racks just have a small clamp on the end of the boot.
