Default kickdown cable adjustment

My 940 was originally having a little problems shifting into forth gear/ overdrive. It would get to about 4500rpm's before it would shift. First and second gear was smooth as ice no problem. I was instructed to try and adjust my kickdown cable so that the little tab was snug against the sleeve. As I checked the tab position it was maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch from the sleeve so I moved it back to fit snug. Thought, problem fixed. WRONG. I now have no fourth gear at all now. I checked my fluid and its fine the Kickdown cable is hooked up atleast going into the tranny. What else could it be before I have to mortgagae my house to have a Volvo dealer look at it? HELP and Thanks.

If you pull the cable by the throttle does it snap back?

The cable should be tightened to eliminate any slop in the cable. It should be tight but not pulling any.

Thanks Tech, I have not checked the cable yet but lets say I do pull it and it snaps back, then what could it be. Is it possible that the cable could be broken inside the trany? It just seems weird to me that the car shifts fine through two gears but OD gives me a problem. It doesn't make sense. Is there any other adjustments that can be made? How about the OD selenoid even though the OD arrow light is not on?

If the cable returns good and you can hear it clicking back then the cable is fine.
There will only be a problem if the cable stays out.

There is a possibility that the soleniod is bad.Check for power at the soleniod. Then have someone hit the button while you are under there and see if you hear it clicking.

Tech
If the OD solenoid does go bad is the arrow up lite on the dash supposed to go on? I have a chiltons manual for this 93 940 and it does not show me where it is located. I have heard its on top of the tranny and also maybe on the left ( drivers) side. Lastly, what is the best online parts supply company on the web?
Thanks Gary

If the soleniod goes bad the arrow will still work like normal.

The soleniod is located on the left side of the trans. in about the middle of the trans. You will see the wire going to it.
