Kickdown cable binding

Kickdown cable binding
Hello,
I've a '92 240, 165,000 miles. The kickdown cable has been binding up making the throttle hard to push down. Now the cable pulls out but will not go back toward the transmittion on it's own. (I have to push it back with my fingers) I loosened this up once before by spraying Liquid Wrench down the cable. It was fine for a while but now the problem is back and worse.
Since the Liquid Wrench fix, I've had a transmittion flush and fill and don't want to contaminate the new fluid. I've tried dripping transmittion fluid down the cable to lubricate it and try to get it free. No luck so far. Does anyone have a way of lubing/unsticking this cable?
My Beasley Bible tells me I have to lose 3 qts and drop the pan to replace the cable. I'd like to avoid that if I can. I have about 1000 miles on the trans flush and fill.
Thanks,
Mark

Sorry but my Vote is to replace the cable.

Since tomorrow is Election Day in the USA, I'll vote the same as Tech. [&:]
The reason that lubrication is not working, is probably that one of the cable's wire strands has frayed apart and is binding inside the cable.

RE: Kickdown cable binding
OK, I'l replace it then. It's soaked for a couple days and is better but still not usable. I can slide the cable in and out by hand, it's still binding and it does not return on it's own at all.
Could there be a return spring that attaches to the kickdown cam (where the cable attaches to) in the transmittion broken as well? Ever heard of such a problem?
Thank you for your help.
