I'm installing an M47 gearbox in my formerly automatic 240, and converting to a hydraulic clutch. In this process, I removed the bell housing on the donor M47 (I'm not sure what possessed me to do this; I think I thought I need to do this to install the new pivot ball), Old transmission oil started leaking out around the lower roller bearing. There also appears to be some oil around the input shaft, although it's only a little. I'm wondering if this means I need to replace seals, or is the leaking from the roller bearing normal when the bell housing is removed? Thanks.
(BTW, I know I need to clean the old gasket off the mating surfaces before installing the new bell housing gasket. Is it advisable to use a thin sheen of RTV to help the gasket stay in place, or should it be installed dry?)
Yes that roller bearing is meant to be bathed in oil - I trust you know where and how much oil to put in - 3/4 of it should have leaked out of that bearing.
240s came with a clutch cable - i always did my conversions with a cable - what kind of master/slave hydraulics are you using and is the firewall strong enough? (Firewall supports a clutch cable - so I guess it could support a master cylinder also) But what pedal assembly are you using?
The wrinkle with my car is that it is a RHD car from the UK (1984). I have a pedal assembly from a UK manual car. I plan to follow the advice here: https://www.240turbo.com/hydraulicclutch.html
Any suggestion on using a thin coat of RTV on the gasket for the bell housing, or should it be installed dry?
