This weekend I’m going to look at a '91 740 GLE Wagon. 250,000kms, 5 speed, and it's supposed to be the 16v motor.

I currently own a '95 850 sedan, and love it. Aside from rust, and the typical Canadian weather stuff, are there any well known problems these cars encounter that I should be mindful of?

Do the odometers break like the 850? Can I pull the mileage from the OBDI computer if it is? Evaporator problems?

Interesting car! The 16 V is delicate, needs good maintenance, mainly timing belt issues and associated shafts... But some go well for a long time if cared for. Power is close to a turbo. The 5 speed is nice and RARE!!! (in the US at least)...

Odometers are bad in '91/92, not as bad as 850 but the diodes inside need to be changed once they go...

Cannot pull much from the OBD, not the mileage anyway...

Our '92 745 has the 1041 traction lock rear and that thing works great in the snow. The axle label tag is covered with undercoat but maybe on the test drive you can do a little mini burnout in snow or gravel to see.... Or, the owner might know. C.

 

On a 21 year old car, watch out for everything.
