Hello, I just replaced my alternator and installed new belts.
I can't seem to get the tension correct? too loose its squeals. Ok. I tighten them, and it squeals louder. HELP!?
Is there a proper way to gauge the tension? I read somewhere it should be able to be compressed approx 1/4"
At 1/4" it squeals. Maybe I'm gauging it incorrectly. Or this information is incorrect?
* Another note, I've been playing with the tension and I've gotten it to the point that if I push down on the accelerator the squeal goes away. It happens at idle only and at idle it isn't as bad, its not a constant screech anymore it has more of a rhythm to it.
What alternator belt size did you install? And was it a matched pair? (sold and bundled together to make sure they are the
EXACT same length)
They are different brands. Ones an AC Delco from the local parts store(only had one in stock) and the other one is a generic cheap one from rock auto. I'll have to order another one. That has to be the issue. Thank you. I'll update when the same two belts are installed.
The belts I used/my shop used were from continental. They are Sold as a matched pair. (10X925?) I doubt you will ever have quiet belts with two brands. They are not the same exact size. Sorry.
as hoonk has said you definitely need to use the matched pair. the contitech brand works well in my experience.
also as said if your alternator bushings are worn out replace those at the same time. they are cheap.
this job is kind of a PIA because you need to remove the a/c belt to replace the alt belts. i tend to replace all
4 belts at the same time for that reason....
