Default New Engine Mounts Still Wiggly!

Hey I’m working on my ‘82 245 with the 2.1, 4 speed and I’m having trouble finding a set of engine/transmission mounts that are a little stiffer than usual, when I let the clutch out I can feel bumping from under the car, as well as the shifter moves a lot in like a circular direction. I’ve tried the standard auto parts store set for $20, or the IPD “heavy duty” ones that are from the diesel model. Both still have a lot of movement. I actually had to beat up my exhaust to get it to stop hitting the floor. I know a lot of mounts are meant to break in an accident but honestly I’d rather have a set that don’t shake so much. I do have a bigger driveshaft with a big transmission yoke, but it clears the floor with about 1 inch all the way around. Any help on this would be awesome.

Check the center bearing on the driveshaft. If it is loose or the rubber holding the bearing in is deteriorating that will cause your thumping.

I put a new center support bearing in as well as the rubber thing around it when I put the new driveshaft in.

The 240 engine mounts are very soft - and if you find harder ones - you won't like the new vibrations.

Bumping under car: Is that coming from the exhaust or the driveshaft?

I've had to reposition many 240 exhaust systems to keep them from hitting after replacing engine/trans mounts. Unbolt/reposition/heat/bend - whatever it takes. You start at the front and work your way back. Tailpipe can beat against the bumper, rear muffler too high hits heat shield, axle pipe hits the right spare tire well, front muffler hits the body near where the front mounts are, connector pipe hits the bottom of the car or a bracket - Where is it touching?

And that's a Nice looking 1982! Still have the original fuel injection?

I just welded the exhaust in a different position, and made longer hangers. Now the exhaust is about an inch away from the body in all spots, as the exhaust stopped punching my floor, there’s still a good noise, vibration, and movement right around the shifter. My buddy suggested modifying a set of cheap mounts with either limiters or having threaded rod go through the whole mount.

and yes it does still have the Jetronic system and it runs beautifully! Only issue now is these mounts

If your trans is moving around - the front/center u joints could be stiff/worn/installed poorly.

The u joints are a big possibility that I didn’t consider, after all the battling with that I started to get a little annoyed so I may have screwed one up getting it in. The shaking in the shifter is at its worst when I’m starting from a stop
