Default New Owner with a few questions

Hello,

I just purchased my first Volvo last night and got her home and have a few small problems to get sorted out.

She is a 1985 Volvo that was imported from Belgium (What I have been told). She was still running on a carb stock from the factory and has been converted to run on either CNG or LPG (currently on LPG). She runs great and has been on this fuel for several years now.

The problem that I am having is that she is really sloppy on shifting. The five speed transmission works great other than you have to "hunt" for the gears. First for example you have to lift slightly op on the lock out for reverse to get into 1st gear. Then going between gears it can be a hit or a miss to get them on the first attempt. Is this the shifter itself or is this the linkage? Or even the clutch cable?

I believe that to be the only real issue at the moment. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,

Does anyone have any ideas on what could cause the shifter to feel loose and sloppy?

Also when your altenator starts going out does the idiot light start flickering on and off randomly. My started that today after taking her out finally. Just get her tagged and insured and cant wait to start driving her on monday to work.

You say 5 speed transmission? Is it a manual 4 speed with the overdrive button? If so, the shifter sits in a big nylon bushing assembly that's known to disintegrate with age, replacing it is a cheap, easy fix that will really improve things.

Regards, Andrew.

Morning,

The transmission is not the 4 speed with the overdrive. The transmission is rather the newer 5 gear style with reverse to the left and the 5th gear off to the right.

Is this bushing part of the shifter or a standalone piece?

Thanks

Yes the battery light flickering is a sign of charging problems ... usually a loose connection at the alternator.

Never mind on the light. I discovered that this vehicle still has a choke on it due to when it was imported. It is not hooked up but on occasion it light comes just to mess with me I guess.

Hello,

New problem. Since this car has been imported from Belgium to the US I ran into a problem with the blower motor. I recently picked up a replacement from the local auto store and it doesnt match the unit in the car. I investigated further and found out that they used a specific heater unit overseas. Any ideas on how to replace the blown motor for the fan?
