Default A few questions from a new V70 AWD owner

Hi all,

I've just bought myself a 98 V70 AWD with 198 000 km.

Anyways I think there are still a few things to get done, what do you reckon about :

- replacing the PCV breather system (there's smoke when I pull the dipstick on a running engine and there's steam from the exhaust well after it's up to temperature), I'm not convinced the 'clean out' I had by the mechanic has worked.

- I'm getting a noise from the front passenger side suspension which sounds grinding metallic and crunchy whenever I hit a bump or corner hard right, almost like the rubber on the top of the strut is shot ?? Any suggestions on what it could be?

- The power steering is quite audible when at full or almost full lock in either direction at low speeds - is this normal ?

- The car came with a set of 15" Volvo steel wheels, I thought alloys where standard on the AWD, am I mistaken ?

- The stereo needs a code, which I don't have, anywhere I can go to get it ?

Any help appreciated - I'm very happy with the brick so far, despite the probs I've outlined above !

1. The PCV system likely needs to be replaced.

1-a. Steam from the exhaust after the car is warm is likely anti-freeze from a bad head gasket. What color is the smoke? Replace the PCV and see if it clears up.

2. Strut mounts are common problem for these fwd cars. Could be more like control arms or sway bar links.

3. PS should not be noisy. If fluid level good? If so, could be that your rack is gone bad.

4. I think all turbo cars came with alloy wheels. People get steel spares all the time and sometimes don't swap back. You can double check at the Volvo site:
Volvo Cars | Community | Your Volvo

5. You can get the stereo code by calling a dealer. You can also check the sticky's in the general, S70, V70 and 850 sections. They have a lot of good info for you, also details about finding radio codes.

Cannot start radio after putting in new battery

Thanks rspi - I've got the car booked in next week to have the PCV replaced. I will also have them look at the suspension noise and the noise from the PS.

I also called the original dealer who was happy to provide the code for the CD/radio.

I was concerned about head gasket issues too, however, that does not appear to be the problem as I've had a combustion leak test done and I'm not losing any coolant. The temp moves up to halfway and never moves from that position regardless of where I'm driving or what the weather is doing either.

Good. I just did the PCV system in my newer 850 and it was really bad. I'm surprised that it hadn't blown seals, etc.
